ABOUT US

Who We Are

The Summerland Bluegrass Festival is operated by The Summerland Bluegrass Society. Our mission goes beyond putting on an annual bluegrass festival (except for 2020 & 2021, for obvious reasons). Our vision is a dedication to the preservation and promotion of Bluegrass and Old Time Country music. It’s also to provide an atmosphere of harmony and acceptance at all levels of playing, within the Bluegrass Circle. And, to create a bluegrass community where singers and musicians, young and old, may come together to play, sing and exchange knowledge.

We would love to have you join us… as a fellow musician, an audience member, a sponsor, or a volunteer!

Summerland Bluegrass Festival Stage

About Our Festival

With unlimited camping, covered seating and a covered stage, we strive to provide fun, rain or shine.

The festival site is close to the town of Summerland, and numerous amenities of the area, including wineries, lakes for swimming and fishing, hiking, cycling, boating, kayaking, wind surfing and all that this gorgeous region has to offer.

Did I mention the KVR Steam train? You never know who might hold you up for a bit of coin! 😉

The Okanagan Valley makes everyone feel at home and welcome. Stay a while, and make it a special holiday.

We have been told, a time or two, that this is the most fun and interactive festival they have attended. People love our workshops and band scrambles, and the opportunity to perform on stage.

We plan to send you home with a smile on your face and a song in your heart!

EVENING JAMMING
At the end of each day during the festival, it’s time for jamming! You’ll find the old-style parking lot pickin’ and grinnin’, or head over to our large log building for some ‘circle jamming’, or jam in the advanced pickers tent.

Of course, listeners and toe-tappers are always welcome… and needed! There’s no need for anyone to feel left out. The various jamming spots are good places to meet everyone, especially if you are new to the scene.

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT CONCERTS
Friday and Saturday evening provides a much-needed break, after all the performances, the band scramble and the workshops. The featured bands will provide some top-notch entertainment, while you sit down and rest your weary bones… and fingers!

After the concert, you will have the energy to jam into the wee hours of the morning.

Lawrence Trudeau - founder of Summerland Bluegrass Festival

Tribute

Lawrence Trudeau discovered Bluegrass music when he first attended a jam at Juliette Spear’s in Penticton. He was “bit by the bluegrass bug”  as they would say, and it was full steam ahead.

He passed away in 2004 at the age of 79, his quiet leadership will always be remembered. He gave freely of himself with a winning smile, he was the very essence of our Bluegrass family.

Dan McLachlan

DIRECTOR

Start Date: October 2023
Prior to retiring in Summerland, I spent most of my life in Alberta’s Peace Country, where I first worked in the graphic arts field, then moved to some entrepreneurial ventures, including the travel industry, retail, and property development. Being an active member of several organizations and service clubs through the years, has also been very enjoyable.

I started playing old-time music at family gatherings, at 12 years of age, and have always enjoyed playing a wide variety of music styles; first on the piano, then dabbling with a few other instruments. Re-discovering the guitar a few years ago has motivated me to get back to playing music, and to learn new material.

The Bluegrass community and music are relatively new to me, but more than fulfills my passion for music and the fellowship it provides.

John Duquette
